Lifeguarding Classes



With over 3,600 children under the age of 14 drowning each year, the Y takes a strong stance on making sure that the individuals watching the lives of others have the best training possible.

This course is designed to provide participants the knowledge and skills necessary to become a lifeguard and a professional rescuer.  This course presents information on the skills knowledge lifeguards need in pool, lake, river, surf and waterpark environments.  The comprehensive course offers up-to-date information on how to anticipate and prevent problems before they occur, as well as how to take proper action to help those in danger when necessary.

Skills and areas that will be taught during this course include:

  • safety skills
  • accident prevention
  • scanning and guarding techniques
  • emergency systems
  • rescue skills
  • spinal injury management
  • open water dangers
  • legal responsibilities
  • pool maintenance basics
  • job search assistance

We offer Lifeguarding courses several times a year.  To participate you must:

  • Be a minimum of 16 years of age by the completion of class
  • Be a strong swimmer
  • Be able to communicate to others
  • Be good at quick decision making


Pre-requisites needed to pass the course:

  • Swim 100 yards front crawl
  • Swim 50 yards each of front crawl with head up, side stroke, breast stroke, breast stroke with head up, and inverted breast stroke kick.
  • Tread water for 2 minutes
  • Perform a feet first surface dive and swim under water for 15 feet


This course will consist of 27.5 hours of training, which will include CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Basic First Aid and Oxygen Administration.  You will be certified by ASHI (American Safety and Health Institute).  There are online e-learnings that must be completed for every class.
